Keeping an Automated Trading System Online During Power Outages

If you've never relied on a computer for anything more important than checking email, a power outage is mostly an inconvenience. The lights go out, you wait a while, and eventually everything comes back on.

 

When you're running an automated trading system, it's a little different.

 

Suddenly you're thinking about things most people never have to consider. Did the internet stay up? Did the computer stay connected? Did the alerts continue running? Did the trading platform reconnect properly when power returned?

 

A few months ago I realized I had spent a lot of time building the software side of my trading system while spending very little time thinking about what would happen if the power disappeared.

 

Living in the Dominican Republic, that wasn't a hypothetical. It was an oversight worth correcting fast.

 

A Word on Where I'm Trading From

 

Some context for anyone reading this from outside Latin America.

 

The Dominican Republic has a notoriously unreliable electrical grid. Brief outages — what locals call apagones — are a normal part of daily life here. Sometimes the power drops for a few seconds. Sometimes it's gone for hours. It's not unusual to lose power several times in a single day, often without warning and rarely on any predictable schedule. Many homes and businesses run inverters or generators as a matter of course, because the question isn't whether the grid will fail but when.

 

My internet comes through Claro, which is the largest telecommunications provider in the Dominican Republic and across much of Latin America. They handle home internet, mobile, and TV for a huge share of the region. The "Claro demarcation point" I mention later just means the spot in my house where their service line comes in and connects to my equipment — the modem and router that turn their signal into my working internet connection.

 

If you're reading this from somewhere with a stable grid and a different provider, the brand names don't matter. The principle does. Any time your trading infrastructure depends on power and connectivity you don't fully control, you have a problem worth solving before it solves itself.

 

The Problem Wasn't My Laptop

 

At first I assumed the laptop was the weak point.

 

It turns out it wasn't.

 

Modern laptops already have a built-in battery backup system. Even during a power interruption, the computer itself can continue running for hours.

 

The real problem was everything else.

 

The monitor would shut off. The modem would lose power. The router would lose power. The internet connection would disappear. And once the internet disappeared, it didn't matter how much battery life the laptop had left.

 

An automated trading system without internet is just an expensive paperweight.

 

That's when I started looking at the entire setup instead of focusing on a single device.

 

Why Reliability Matters

 

The goal wasn't to keep trading through a week-long blackout.

 

The goal was much simpler.

 

I wanted enough redundancy to keep my workstation, internet connection, and automation online during the types of interruptions that actually happen — the brief, frequent ones that define life on this grid.

 

If TradingView sends an alert, I want the system available to receive it.

 

If a trade is open, I want monitoring systems to continue running.

 

If I'm working remotely, I want the internet to remain available.

 

That required protecting both power and connectivity.

 

The Constraint Most Setup Guides Ignore

 

One thing that doesn't show up in most online recommendations is the physical layout of your house.

 

In my case, the networking equipment is located near the Claro demarcation point while my desk is located elsewhere.

 

If everything were in the same location, I could simply plug the entire setup into one backup power source and call it a day.

 

Unfortunately, real-world setups are rarely that simple.

 

Running extension cords across rooms wasn't practical, so I ended up building a layered system instead.

 

The Heart of the System: EcoFlow DELTA 3 Max

 

The primary backup power source in my office is an EcoFlow DELTA 3 Max.

 

This unit powers the equipment located at my desk, including my laptop and monitor.

 

The reason I chose a larger power station instead of a small battery backup was flexibility. The DELTA 3 Max provides enough capacity to keep the workstation operational without constantly worrying about runtime. It also serves other purposes around the house when needed, which made it easier to justify the investment.

 

For my specific use case, this became the foundation of the entire setup. Without it, every power interruption would immediately turn into a race against the laptop battery.

Why I Still Use a UPS

 

This is where the setup gets a little less conventional.


Even though the EcoFlow could theoretically power everything, it can't do much for equipment that's located in another part of the house.


That's where a separate UPS comes in.


I currently use a Forza 1801 Pro UPS to protect the networking equipment near the Claro connection point. It's larger than what most people would need for a modem and router, but it was readily available locally and has performed well for my setup.


For readers in the United States, a smaller UPS from APC or CyberPower would likely accomplish the same goal. The specific brand isn't really the important part. The objective is simply to keep the modem and router powered during an outage.


The UPS is dedicated to the networking equipment near the Claro connection point. Its job is simple: keep the modem and router alive.


That's it.


The UPS doesn't need to power monitors, laptops, or office equipment. It only needs to keep the internet connection running long enough for the rest of the system to remain connected.


If my desk were located next to the networking equipment, I probably wouldn't need this separate layer. Because it isn't, the UPS solves a practical problem.

The Third Layer Nobody Thinks About

 

There's another backup system built into the setup that often gets overlooked.

 

The laptop itself.

 

Even if both external systems failed, the laptop still has its own battery.

 

That means there are effectively multiple layers of protection working together:

 

- EcoFlow DELTA 3 Max protecting the workstation

- UPS protecting the networking equipment

- Laptop battery providing additional redundancy

 

No single layer is perfect. Together they create a much more reliable system.

 

What I Learned

 

The biggest lesson wasn't about batteries. It was about identifying the actual point of failure.

 

I originally assumed power was the problem. The reality was that internet connectivity was just as important.

 

It doesn't matter if the computer stays on if the modem and router are offline. It also doesn't matter if the internet survives but the workstation shuts down.

 

Reliability comes from looking at the entire chain instead of focusing on one device.

 

I also learned that automation is only as reliable as its weakest link. People spend a lot of time discussing trading strategies, indicators, and software. Much less time is spent discussing the infrastructure that keeps those systems running. Yet when something fails, it's usually the infrastructure that causes the problem.

 

The Bottom Line

 

This isn't necessarily the setup everyone should build. It's simply the setup that solved my specific problem.

 

The objective wasn't to create the most expensive or complicated backup system possible. The objective was to create a reliable environment for automated trading and remote work on a grid that doesn't cooperate.

 

For me, that meant combining an EcoFlow DELTA 3 Max with a dedicated UPS for the networking equipment and allowing the laptop battery to act as an additional layer of protection.

 

Could it be improved? Probably. Will it evolve over time? Almost certainly. But for now it accomplishes the goal that mattered most: keeping the system online when the power goes out.
